Soft Opening at Mestizo in Belltown

Feleke and I checked out Mestizo on Thursday night. It's a new "tequila ultra lounge" in Belltown, taking over the space that previously belonged to Twist.

Mestizo is currently in the soft opening and they have a limited menu right now.

Feleke ordered the ceviche.

Ceviche ($16)
 I ordered the chicken fajitas.

Mestizo wants to be a tequila lounge and they definitely deliver on that. They have three pages of every type of tequila you could imagine.

I did not take pics of the inside, but here's what I can tell you. The sparkly pig is gone, there is still a front bar and back bar (we sat at the back). There are many private booths, lots of seating space. The back room at Twist that was a private area is now converted to booths. They also had a live band playing Latin music, and from what I heard, they play to have music every evening.

We spoke to a few employees and there are plans to have food brunch on the weekends, lunch during the week and - get this - late night available until 4:00 a.m. Late night is going to be a shit-show, I am sure.

Oh, one more thing to note, they are somehow related to Tia Lou's, but I received different answers on the connection. The one that most of the staff said was one of the current owners was a general manager at Tia Lou's?

We'll see how they do in the next few months. Hopefully we'll see an expanded menu and prices fall.

It is the Peruvian Ceviche. I was told by the chef that in Peru, that is the traditional way of serving it. With popped corn.

Thank you for coming to check us out.

I think in Peru they use cancha, not popcorn. It's similar, but not the same. My friend that lived in Ecuador for some time told me that popcorn served with (not on top) of ceviche is somewhat common.

Ridiculously overpriced food that was barely edible. the Bife, a skirt steak dish, came out totally cold as did most of the rest of the food. We were charged $3 for an additional plate of chips. The house drinks are so sweet as to be barely drinkable and cost $10 before tax. Most of the drinks seem to be either blue or pink, reflecting the fact that the owners are promoters at Tia Lou's and an owner at iMusic. We asked for salt and were told there were no salt shakers (?????). Loud latin r & b and reggaeton was blaring through blown speakers.
This place is horrible. I'd be astounded if they stay in business till June.
